Knife Chat with Tobias focuses on the history of traditional knives and/or their manufacturers. I collect traditional pocket knives and fixed blades. I am a knife collector, and as such I do not carry every knife in my collection.
Knives of interest:
Powder horn frames, Toothpicks, Fish Knives
Scout Knives, Hobos, Swiss Army Knives
Military knives, especially USAF knives (fixed and folding)
Nautical Knives.
Knives made for specific trades (Electrician, Carpentry, Etc.)
Strange knives, novelty knives, things you don't see everyday
The occasional modern folder (especially Spyderco)
I am not associated with any specific store, brand, or knife maker and do not accept payment for reviews. I also do not do abusive use tests. If you want me to break a knife for you, buy it and send it to me.
My other Channel is devoted to scale model building

Bear & Son Farmhand: a modern take on the traditional Sodbuster

I picked up this Bear & Son at the same time as the Moonshine Barlow. The Farmhand is more or less an modern take on the traditional slip joint. I think it safe to assume that if Bear & Son's these are the knives that people have been talking about when they are say Bear & Son have stepped up their quality. Hype or Hate: Does the Red Hill Moonshine Barlow live up to the recent Bear & Son praises?

It seems like there is a lot of praise for Bear & Son Pocket knives. As a person who has bought several Bear & Son pocket knives I'm have been somewhat skeptical of the recent rash of UA-camrs singing high praises for Bear & Son. I was also skeptical of the hate heaped on Bear & Son in past years. In this episode I like at my third Bear & Son Barlow and compare it to past releases. Join this ch...

I was trying to think of the best way to celebrate Independence Day on the channel. I settled on American Pocket Knives that served America well during WWII. William Rodgers of Sheffield, F-S Fighting Knife (Commando Dagger)
When I get one a little stiff or "gravelly " opening I put a small amount of mothers mag and aluminum polish in there and open and close it a bunch. Then give it a good clean and oil.
Another great video. I didn’t know what had happened to Wenger. Guess I should hang on to some of the older Wengers I have (pre-Victorinox take-over).
I agree. The SAK is in a category of its own. It’s a traditional slip joint, it’s a modern slip joint. It’s a multifunction knife. And very confusing with all of their features. Definitely the leader in global sales and knock offs. Still innovative and a very useful item. The true every man’s knife. I usually forget about the Classic SD on my keys until I need it.
I have several offshore tiny toothpicks ranging from 1” to 3.5”. I also have a few peanuts, but prefer the slightly larger serpentine/dogleg jack.
My personal top 3 patterns are Canoes, Barlows and Dogleg Jacks. Canoes and Barlows are easy but the dogleg isn’t nearly as available. Most of the doglegs I find are from older companies and/or offshore producers. I like the blade selection on the dogleg, clip and pen, and the size. I have often wondered if the dogleg is less available because it is basically an oversized version of the more popular peanut, which may be in the top five collected traditional slip joints. I have a fair number of peanuts, but really prefer larger doglegs.
i have a similar Sitivien knife. and yes, they are modeled after the popularity of the ceo
Great video, so much information to learn about Victorinox SAK's. I am just getting into them and I have to say the rabbit hole goes deep. Thanks for sharing and have a great day.
Nice and discreet
Looks like a CRKT CEO knockoff.
Yep. No doubt about it!
Glad you cleared that up 😂 Good one, T👍
Thanks.
Very informative Tobias! I'm still working on the response to Part 1. (I haven't forgotten.) Thanks for sharing your thoughts, my friend.
Tobias thanks Now I NEED more Swiss Army knives lol
Great looking handles on it, very nice! 👍
Thanks. I'm pretty happy with it, overall.
with regard to UA-camr knife community , I would say the Compact is probably the most regarded as a 91mm EDC but I am sure sales don't reflect that because things like Spartan's, Tinker's, Climber's , Super Tinker's and Huntsman's far out sell them and UA-cam knife community people are a very small percentage in the whole of Victorinox world of knives. I would put the Compact in my top 3 of 91mm/93mm Victorinox EDC's like most of UA-camr's do because it's got a lot of function in a thin package. The Compact is not just over hyped and over priced. It's a sensible EDC and worth every penny for all that it can do. In December Amazon had them on sale for $39 in the U.S.. the best value bang for the buck is the Huntsman at around $35-ish but it's bulky as a EDC practical pocket carry
The naming "swiss army knife" is mostly an american thing. In most of the world i think they are mostly called Victorinox or Wenger. Victorinox bought Wenger when they where going go bankrupt. They did it to keep the brand name in swiss ownership. Today there is only Victorinox in production, the Wenger brand name is no more on knives. You missed out on the best gentleman size: Victorinox 74mm size. Now, sadly, defunct. Victorinox is making about 45000 knives a day. I prefer 93mm Alox. I find it "funny" that there is a lot of american copies of Victorinox knives but no one is screaming "Copycat" or "fake". But if they where made in China.... Ohh boy. EDIT: At 14:50 Correction: the Farmer is a 93mm Alox without back tools. Add a scissor and you got the Farmer X. 24:26 That is a Soldier. You can see the Swiss cross instead of Victorinox cross. It should have a year stamp on the tang too.
58mm Victorinox Classic SD/Classic has probably sold more than any knife in history. Since the 70's it has been a keychain staple all over the world and since the 80's that has been it's marketing. Still don't know why they retired all 74mm stuff last year but they aren't a very keychain friendly size. Would love to have a 58mm Vagabond and put Manager scales on it but Vagabonds are way over priced and Manager's are jumping up now that they are retired
SAK's are their own can of worms, thanks for the deep dive into them. 👍 Take care my friend and Cheers!
and what's it called when you add the coffee grinder?
Called a SSAK, Southern Swiss Army Knife.
Victorinox for sure, Great video Tobias!!
Thanks!
Great educational video!! Thank you for covering such a challenging subject.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
My favorite 91mm in order Fieldmaster Tinker Hiker Super Tinker Huntsman
You must be one of the back mounted phillips screwdriver fans! Nice options!
Overwhelming indeed. And a wonderful rabbit hole of collecting, IMO. Great video, buddy!
There's "Knife Collecting" and then there is "Swiss Army Knife Collecting."
That was so much information that my head is spinning - thanks for the video
I have the Compact in 91mm frame and you didn't show one. lol 😁
@@lewisgreenway5065 , 😂, I have not only the Compact but the earlier Golfer Knives! For me not to show it was probably criminal!
@@KnifeChatswithTobias you have so many Victorinox I know you couldn't show them all, I only have The Compact because I wanted a knife with scissors and it is the only Cellidor Victorinox I have I have others in the Alox scales and a garden knife, don't know what the scales are but softer than Cellidor. 😁
I’ve never collected Swiss Army knives, but I probably still have a couple of dozen and I’ve had. I don’t know how many over the years. Some of the first knives I owned were knockoffs of the SAK because only rich kids could afford genuine ones!
SAK's really are their own category of slipjoint knives and I think are defined more by their toolset than the sublimity of their looks, feel, or appearance. Whereas other slipjoint patterns are defined by shape, color, blade type, f&f, walk & talk, intended use, or whatever suits the buyers fancy du jour. However there are exceptions to that rule such as the varied SAK covers offered, available, custom made, or to be changed out that makes for more choices and as you pointed out folks kind of know what to expect when they by a real SAK.
Absolutely agree. If anything, they fall into the category of "Multifunction knife" or the broader category of "Multifunction Tool"
Corkscrew on a Boy Scout knife? How else are you going to earn your mixology merit badge.
@@deniskozlowski9370 , absolutely!
I've always leaned towards Wenger. I think the main reason is the can opener. I also like the clip on the main blade. To be honest I really like both the Wenger and Victorinox. You can't go wrong with the SWISS ARMY KNIFE. They have so many models to choose from, you can edc a different model for what ever you are doing.💯
my SAK Boy Scout Huntsman is the one knife i would never be without. Its called the fieldmaster now
I've always wondered which came first, the BSA Huntsman or the Fieldmaster.
1:22 It isn't a question of collecting a single pattern, people who collect SAKs often collect all of them. The question is how you define "all." Historically, quite a number of people had a preference for either Victorinox or Wenger, and would collect from their preferred maker. Other people didn't care and collected both. Still other people would define all as anything similar to the official SAKs.
@@rockets4kids , agreed. I have many of knock offs and have Wengers but really focus on the Vic’s. And I definitely see SAKs in a category separate from my other slip joints.
@@KnifeChatswithTobias I have always been on Team Victorinox as well. I developed that as a child for reasons I've long since forgotten. As an adult, I went back to revisit the vintage Wengers of my childhood and they are just fine. But in the era since Victorinox purchased Wenger, I have found the knives currently made on the Wenger tooling/patterns to be way overpriced.
Kooks like an old w-49
Absolutely. Everything about it is say W-49 except the brand.
Victorinox/cold steel but carred Swiss army knives for 42 years now. Cold steel for just 5 years. I just have the update solider knife off 08 i like it it locks.
I still have my knife, from 1969. The sheath it came with was the one piece of leather folded over type. Thanks for the discussion!
The info I found says USA made with 1065 carbon steel. Ever heard of 1065? Also available in red bone. Thanks Tobias
1065 is a carbon steel typically used on machetes. That said, I've seen other other machete steels used on a pocket knives these days. 1065 is known for its toughness but it would have poor edge retention compared to 1095. It would also have a much lower HRC.
Fascinating video. Didn't know that about Lincoln's knife.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
This is a great series on slip joints. I have been carrying small slip joints in my small summer challenge. I have been carrying a 3” or smaller knife as my dedicated knife and so far, I have not had any issues with using just a small knife. I love Jack knife patterns and I would like some more peanuts and small swell centers. I’m definitely exploring the smaller knives and having a great time doing it.
I've come to the conclusion that for most tasks, a small knife is all you really need. Simple and unassuming. That said, I Doubt, I'll ever convince Skip to give up his obsession with Bowie Knives and other Big blades!
@@KnifeChatswithTobias I agree. But Skip isn’t wrong, big knives are fun, not necessarily practical, but fun!
I've had great luck with Rough Rider. Ever knife is well finished with a very pleasant half-stop.
Hard to argue with Rough Riders! Thanks for watching!
That first bass knife is my favorite. I wonder how many knives you have now more than four years later
I try not to think about it. I know I'm fast approaching 2,000!
Nice looking piece
Cool knife. So these are on eBay, as seconds for around $30. The only reason I never got one was because it doesn’t have USA stamped on it. They sell this one and a red boned version as seconds. For someone who doesn’t really like trappers, you sure do own some nice ones. Thanks for sharing
I don't like the way Trappers are over marketed and how just about every knife that isn't a historical pattern is some how suddenly a "Trapper" For Bow Trapper, Slimline Trapper, Jumbo Trapper, Bartender Trapper, etc. What used to be called a jack knife is now called trappers regardless of blade options just to generate sales.
I like the looks of it. I wish they would do another run - I’d buy one.
My guess is they will.
Beautiful knife
Thanks. they did a pretty good job with it.
@@KnifeChatswithTobias you’re welcome. Yeah they did.
Totally agree. B&S does rosewood real well. Their "genuine Indian stag bone" looks like a 3 year oid tried to imitate Case's 6.5 stag.
The promotional photos that Bear & Son uses for its ""genuine Indian stag bone" are probably grounds for a fraud case compared to what you get on the actual knives.
@@KnifeChatswithTobias they do play pretty fast and loose with "genuine".
I really appreciate your thoughts on this one. I think it's a great looking knife, and I'd carry that one any day. With those blade shapes, I'm guessing I'd be happy to have that one along on a hunting trip as well! Cheers, buddy!
It's a pretty cool knife. Seems to be a sturdy one as well!
